Novelty Style

by Liz Finkelstein of MILE HIGH STYLE  {LISTmember}

Of all style conundrums, the most popular among friends, clients, and just about everyone I know, involves the fallacy that new = better. Somehow, if you just bought it (a top, jeans, shoes, jewelry, anything), it looks better and makes an outfit more stylish. In reality, after one or two wears, the novelty wears off and you’re once again in search of something else new.

I understand this cycle very well. Not only were my 20s a testament to novelty style (with Barneys, Bergdorfs & Bendels reaping the benefits), I still feel the thrill of a new piece and suspect I always will. However, I also understand that this habit is lazy, costly, and detrimental to the ultimate style goal: to shop your closet and make new outfits out of old clothing. To that end, you have three tools to help break the cycle.

Discipline- Perhaps surprisingly, the single best tool to bring into your closet is self control: to say no, to resist the easy urge (and splurge), to shop smart, or (temporarily) stop shopping at all.

Creativity- Abandon the rules and rigidity of this goes with that and open your mind to the possibilities. This is a mental exercise; if your brain is not engaged, you’re spinning your wheels.

OutsourcingThis is what I do. About 75% of my business involves making old new again, and better yet, I can teach you the tools to do it yourself.

Stand Up Paddle Board has hit Colorado

S.U.P. – Stand Up Paddle Boarding. This great new sport has arrived in Colorado! The first dedicated outfitter on the Colorado River and one of the first in the West!  Stand Up Paddle Colorado is a dream that started to become a reality when Scotty Stoughton met Javier Placer last spring at State Bridge. Javi has been guiding internationally for over a decade and is one of the first river runners to jump on a SUP over 4 years ago on the Arkansas River.

Javier Placer-Rodriguez - Co-founder, is an accomplished 12-year river guide with international experience, Javier has safely guided thousands of thrill seekers. Certified in Class III – Class V whitewater in Costa Rica while working 3 years for the internationally renowned outfitter, Rios Tropicales.  He guided extensively on the Reventazon, Pacuare, Sarapiqui, Corobici and General rivers as well as worked on multi day sea kayaking tours subcontracting for international outfitters such as Mountain Travel Sobek.   He guided in California for Earth Trek Expeditions running tours on the South Fork and Middle Fork of the American River.  In 2001 Javier moved to Colorado and began working for Kodi Rafting and worked as a head boatman (2002), trip leader, and safety kayaker and guide instructor until 2005.  He commercially ran the Arkansas River (Numbers’s, Town, Brown’s Canyon, Royal Gorge), Clear Creek (Lawson, Dumont, Town to Kermitz), Blue River, Upper Colorado (Pumphouse to State Bridge) and the Dolores River. {read more at mtn town views}

Scotty Stoughton - Co-founder, Originally from the coast of New Jersey, Scotty has made a home in the mountains near Vail Colorado for over 15 years.  Surfing took Stoughton around the globe from Fiji to Kauai but the clean outdoor healthy lifestyle grounded him near the Colorado River.  With over 20 years of surfing experience to draw from, Scotty continued to search for a Colorado water sport that matched the excitement and freedom of wave riding.

During a visit to Kauai in 2009 he got his first taste of stand up paddle boarding and he has been hooked ever since.  The following spring it was time to take SUP’ing into the rivers.  At that time the sport was unheard of and rarely seen on the rivers of Colorado.  But with a C4 inflatable in hand, a life jacket and helmet, it was time to take the plunge. {read more at mtn town views}

Your Child’s Birthday

A few tips for your child’s birthday party:

1. Have a fun theme! I love this little girl’s rock’n’ birthday party shown below.

2. Dessert: cupcakes, cakes, ice cream, candy. Go Crazy with the sweets! Incorporate your colors and theme into the desserts.

3. Favors: Although not a requirement, it is a nice gesture. Try to find something kid and parent friendly like crayons, sidewalk chalk, stickers……

4. Games and Activities need to be prepared to entertain your little guests. Story telling, pen the tail on the donkey, scavenger hunt……

5. A photo booth with props that go along with your theme is a big hit at kids party. Juicy Booth in Denver is kid friendly and a blast for the kids. See the photos below.

6. Decor: Yes, it is easy to go absolutely overboard with the decor. Remember that a bunch of balloons always does the trick.

A hike with city and mountain views

Colorado is an amazing place to live. Last week, I took a couple of hours off of work for an afternoon hike to talk “shop” with Denver photographer and Super 8 extraordinaire Kevin Von Qualen. I love that just a few minutes from the city you can get enjoy gorgeous Colorado scenery and solitude.

We chose to hike Green Mountain. It is close to the city, easy to get to and let’s be honest it is not that hard of hike which allowed us to chit chat the whole way.

All of you have driven by this mountain when coming to and from the mountains on I-70. Green Mountain has a large network of trails. Great for a leisure hike, trail running and biking.

Three trailheads allow you access Green Mountain in Lakewood, CO. All of them are found on west Alameda Ave. on the southern side of the mountain.

Directions to Trailhead: From I-25, take 6th Ave. west. Drive approximately 6 miles to Kipling. Take Kipling south for 2 miles before taking a right on Alameda. Stay on Alameda for 3 miles until you see a parking area on the right. This trail is part of William Frederick Hayden Park.

You will see great views of the city, mountains, and Red Rocks. Since this trail is located just 10 minutes from Denver, it tends to get crowded on the weekends.

Who are you dressing for?

by Liz Finkelstein of MILE HIGH STYLE  {LISTmember}

There’s a long-standing style musing: women dress for other women. The wisdom behind the sentiment maintains that since men aren’t as style savvy or detail oriented, women look for acceptance and praise from female friends. Despite this, I’ve noticed an interesting paradigm shift during my time working the boutiques with clients: many women are swapping out their traditional shopping partner (friends) for their man.

I love seeing men in clothing stores. They look as graciously out of place as (I suspect) I do shopping for a grill in Home Depot. I appreciate the effort to help and their patience about the whole endeavor. And while it seems that their ambivalence on your dressing room selections suggests a need for some style education for them, it is actually we who need the learning. Mainly that dressing for a style and dressing for a man are two very different and, sometimes, mutually exclusive goals.

You don’t have to be an evolutionary psychologist to know that men are incredibly visual. When the body or its outline is visible or accentuated, they will respond more passionately. I always know which pieces my clients’ men will like best, and they are always those that highlight shape and curves. My beautiful client Kara’s (pictured) Diane Von Furstenberg dress is exactly that piece; it suggests her hourglass figure without flaunting, shows yet covers. At my request, she accessorizes with black opaque tights and matching platform heels to downplay the sexiness, but can just as easily rock bare legs and a serious heel. I’ll let you guess which option her husband might prefer…

Men don’t get edgy footwear or plays on proportion. Billowey and blousey (two silhouettes that are always fashion forward) are lost on them. The head to toe details that I tirelessly promote (both here and in my client sessions) just don’t translate where most men are concerned. So when you come out of the dressing room to a dispassionate reception (something I see all the time), remember to ask yourself who you’re dressing for.

In my opinion, the overlap between what stylish women like to wear and what most men want to see is a small one. However, the following I can recommend to work on both fronts.

Susana Monaco Strapless Dress- This best-seller from Chelsea does require a certain body type, but it celebrates a woman’s curves and is a proven fan favorite among the men.

Susana Monaco Halter Top- If you’re interested in showing (the girls) and covering (the tummy), this top is ideal.

Diane Von Furstenberg Wrap Dress- This iconic design is the creation of a woman, yet satiates the style sensibilities of men because of its body celebrating, curve hugging silhouette.
