Interview: Lynn Clark Boudoir

I am so pleased to introduce you to our first boudoir photographer on our resource guide: Lynn Clark. She creates intimate, sexy, sensual (and even naughty) photos that will remind you just how beautiful you really are. Yeah, that's right. She makes you look good!!!! Then, you have the pleasure of owning the artwork. So when you�re 85 and wrinkly, you can look back and say, �damn, I was hot!� Do it for yourself. You deserve it. When and why did you start your business? I started my boudoir portrait studio part-time in 2010. At the time I was working in my full-time public relations career. I had been doing photography as a hobby and shooting events for some nonprofits (as well as at the day job), and that led to my doing an engagement session, then a wedding, for a friend for fun. During the getting-ready photos, the bride asked me to do a few photos of her in her bridal lingerie. She told me later that those photos made her feel like a woman instead of a tomboy, and I was hooked on boudoir. I photographed boudoir sessions part-time until April 2012, when I left my corporate career for a full-time adventure into helping women to express their sensuality and bare their beauty through boudoir photos. I was fortunate to find excellent mentors in several nationally acclaimed boudoir photographers. Through one-on-one learning, workshops and photographing nearly 200 women, I've learned not only the technical side, but to me the most important part: being able to connect with a woman, make her feel comfortable with me and trust me, to pose women of all body types in ways that allow them to look past perceived flaws and embrace the gorgeous women they are. Describe your photographer style. My style is classic, intimate and sensual. I want to create "pretty" boudoir photos and "sexy" boudoir photos. For brides, doing a boudoir shoot is a gift for her spouse-to-be, and I keep that in mind when I'm creating the photos so everyone is happy. My goal is to capture real emotion through coaching her through every detail, including what to think about. I believe creating that intimate, emotional connection between subject and viewer is what changes a picture into a portrait. I create portraits. What or who inspires you? I'm inspired the most by my clients who give me their trust and by the change I see so often in them after they've had this experience and have their photos in their hands. I'm also inspired by my daughter, who at 13 keeps pushing through life's pubescent difficulties with grace, and my husband, who is hands down the hardest-working person I know. Any awards or features/publications? My photographs have won several awards from the Association of International Boudoir Photographers and have been published in Philosophie magazine and the association website. (There aren't many places to publish boudoir shoots, unfortunately.) I am also the co-founder of The Business of Boudoir, an education blog specifically for boudoir photographers. Where did you grow up and how did you end up in Colorado? I grew up in Aurora, Colorado and went to Rangeview High School (go Raiders) and Colorado State University (go Rams). Although life has tried to pull me out of our beautiful state, I've somehow resisted. Living here is such a privilege. Advice to a bride planning on getting boudoir photos. First, give yourself plenty of time ahead of your wedding date to do your boudoir session. I recommend scheduling it for about 12-16 weeks ahead. That way, your album and any other products you purchase will be ready well before you need them -- one less thing to stress about in the last days before your big event. Second, when you're thinking about what to wear, consider bringing your bridal lingerie, veil, jewelry, shoes and even your dress. I love incorporating all of those special things into your shoot. And, it's a fun surprise for your spouse to see you in your regular wedding photos ... and then in your naughty wedding photos. It can also be fun to have a simple bouquet made to use as a fun prop. Then, I say think outside the box. I give plenty of guidance in that area, so not to worry. Finally, I want brides to give their partners something amazing ... and I want them to have something amazing they can see every day too. I encourage all of my clients to display a photo or two in a private space. I do it, and I can say that every time I see that huge canvas over my tub, I feel beautiful. Here is a sample of her work.
