How did you get started in your field? I got started as a makeup artist as a career while working for Aveda Corporation from 1995-2010. My introduction to the company was as sales associate in the retail location in the Flatiron District in New York. I loved retailing but hated doing makeup, so I didn't, and my retail numbers reflected it. My team leader at the time demanded that I bring my makeup numbers up and started makeup training for the entire staff with our resident makeup artist, Brian Duprey. There was something about the way Brian introduced the information that helped me at least gain confidence. So I started practicing on customers coming into the store and my numbers and confidence grew. Then the regional makeup artist trainer, Dana Walker, decided to have me assist her for classes she taught. There I learned even more and when she decided to leave the company in 1999, she recommended me for her job. I grew from that position to Global Director of Makeup by the time of my resignation in 2010. What inspired you to create your own line?! While I was in my corporate career, I most enjoyed when we had to create new seasonal launches. I loved the idea of making new palettes and color schemes but found it very limiting because I wasn't at a brand that offered a full line of makeup. So once I became a freelance makeup artist, I loved being FREE! I began to immediately think outside the box and connect to my artistry in a way I had never been able to before and it was effortless for me. Because of this I have a new patented lash curler design that is currently being reviewed for licensing as well as a trademark for POWDER POOF; an idea I have for a full line of very special products I want to produce (details later). What are the top tips for women this fall? It's so exciting to see makeup back in full force; glamorous, wearable, modern. One obvious tip is the bold lip. Lipstick is making a presence in the industry as a preferred product form as well as booming sales growth. The range of color is everything from the classic red to the vampy plums. More forward are the matte textures we are seeing evolve but gloss is still very popular with consumers and can also be used to interpret this trend. Also, a focus on the eyes. It can be as simple as navy blue eyeliner or mascara instead of black, a cat eye or a wearable smoky eye in any color. What must have should be in every purse throughout the day? Now that I am a licensed skin car therapist too, I'm obsessed with skin even more. A hydrating mist like Avene Eau Minerale, Aveda's Skin Firming Toning Agent, Murad's Hydrating Toner or CosMedix Benefit Balance. It is often the not thought about item; hydration from the outside. Especially since we are moving into cooler temperatures where many will be in heated, dry indoor spaces. It's also a great item for warm summer days as a refreshing cool mist. These items are also great to give your makeup a more skin like finish, too. Although contrary to poplar belief it does not set your makeup. Fall trends you adore? I adore this bold lip trend we are seeing because it's the easiest way for a woman to look ultra modern with minimal effort. Also, the simplicity of a cat eye works for the same reason. Fall trends you hate? I'm not so sure this is a fall trend necessarily but there is a right and a wrong way to wear lash extensions. It drives me CRAZY when I see women with clearly a full band lash or several clusters glued on as extensions; WRONG. Lash extensions, when done properly, are literally a single filament lash place atop your natural lash, one at a time, to create length and density at the lash line. It should look natural, enhanced and should not look like you can barely keep your eyes open or like Mrs. Bugs Bunny. Which celebrity client would you like to get your hands on? I would love to design makeup for Lady Gaga because she loves conceptual makeup as well as beauty and I'v been working with those new 3-D elements that I know she would rock. #1 tip for women trying to look simply chic on a daily basis? FIND YOUR PERFECT FOUNDATION SHADE AND FORMULA! It is the best part of makeup; the skin. Being able to create a pristine complexion is what makes so many makeup looks work. If you don't have the best skin possible, make sure you are doing what you can realistically to obtain it because makeup should be an accessory to your look, not your look.
