On January 29 at the Denver Art Museum (DAM), Garry Winogrand: Women are Beautiful presents nearly 50 photographs from the museums collection culled from the hundreds that Garry Winogrand took of women on the street, a selection of which were published in the 1975 book of the same title. Winogrand photographed in crowds and on the street from his early days as a New York magazine freelancer in the 1950s to his last years in Los Angeles. When he sensed the composition of a picture falling into place, Winogrand would quickly raise his camera to his eye and take candid photos of anonymous people. Often he focused on womenin parks, at parties, getting into cars, exiting stores creating photographs that highlighted the changing role of women and, at times, the uncertainty of their new place. Winogrand was the recipient of numerous grants, including several Guggenheim Fellowships and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. The exhibition will be on view in the Delisa and Anthony Mayer Photography Gallery on level seven of the North Building through September 16, 2012.
