Notes from the photographer, Mathew Irving: As Denver wedding photographers, we don't often get the opportunity to photograph such adorable events. But this ones was - quite literally- one for the books. The mom-to-be themed the shower based on her favorite childhood picture book, "Make Way for Ducklings" by Robert McCloskey; a a theme that was part vintage, part whimsy, and a whole lot of sunny cuteness. And the book selection couldn't have been more symbolic! It's like a metaphor for new motherhood... Two Mallard ducks in Boston, MA carefully hatch their very first ducklings. In order to acquire the perfect home for their family, the mother must lead her ducklings across a busy Boston street. Ah, motherhood. Clearly, Laurel (our M.T.B.) is a clever duck. The party favors, vintage yellow soy candles displayed quotes for the story, as well as thank you messages from the M.T.B. Muted yellow and gray decor decked Laurel's living room for this festive occasion, guests donned vintage-stamped mallard name tags and worked together to create a ribbon mobile for the new duckling's nursery. A show-stopping cake (with a delightful watermelon center) was hand-painted in the style of McCloskey's illustrations. Shower game prize winners went home with a handmade yellow and gray clutch, complete with duckling shaped solid hand lotion. Notes from the mom-to-be, Laurel: What inspired your shower theme? I've loved "Make Way for Ducklings" every since I can remember. I guess I've just been waiting to be a mom my whole life without realizing it! I decided to theme the nursery with inspiration from "Make Way from Ducklings", which meant that I'd be able to re-purpose the shower decorations as nursery decor. And I'm so happy I did! The bunting banner looks adorable above the baby's closet and, the little touches (like the yarn flowers and "duckling" baby blocks) really dress up his chest of drawers. And, I was able to use the chalkboard signs that directed the guests at the shower as an adorable place for children's literature quotes in the nursery. What was your favorite shower decoration? Well, it wasn't quite a shower decoration, since it wasn't completed until the very end of the shower itself, but it was definitely the ribbon mobile. I love that every guest - the women I love most in the world - each had a hand in creating this adorable decoration. I hung it above my rocking chair in the nursery and think of my guests every time I look at it. What other important details did you have at your shower? Each guest filled out a "wishes for baby duck". I hung up the sweetest ones on empty ribbon spools in the nursery. My baby will always know he is loved!
